About 90 of the 500 Russian scientists will continue working at CERN

About 90 scientists out of 500 working at Russian institutes of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), with which cooperation will end on November 30, have changed institutes and will continue working with CERN, the spokesperson told RIA Novosti. from CERN, Arnaud Marsollier.

In March, Marsollier told the agency that CERN would stop cooperating with about 500 specialists linked to Russia from November 30 of this year. Official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Maria Zakharova stated that CERN’s decision to suspend cooperation with Russia is politicized and absolutely unacceptable that the political-military situation in the world should not undermine progress in the field of scientific research; Marsolier clarified that not all of them are Russian citizens, but rather they work in Russian institutions.

“Of the 500 scientists who worked in Russian institutes with CERN, about 90 changed institutes during this time (since March). That is why they will continue working with CERN. The change of institutions is something common in the scientific world.” – said.

Marsollier added that fewer than twenty scientists working at Russian institutes with CERN are still looking for a new institute to continue working with the organization.

This spring, the Institute of Nuclear Physics stated that Russia, due to the ban on work at CERN, urgently needs its own state program for the development of fundamental physics to study the deep properties of elementary particles and their interactions, noting that An example of such a revolutionary program is the federal scientific and technical program of neutron and synchrotron research under the direction of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, within the framework of which a synchrotron radiation source is being created in the scientific city of Novosibirsk, Koltsovo. At the same time, the Institute of Nuclear Physics SB RAS has already proactively developed a program for the development of electron-positron colliders in the Russian Federation – the main tools for studying the fundamental properties of matter.

CERN is the largest high energy physics laboratory in the world. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was created by the European Organization for Nuclear Research with the participation of physicists from many countries, including Russia. It is located on the border of Switzerland and France. With the help of the LHC, one of the most important discoveries in modern physics was made: the existence of the Higgs boson, an elementary particle responsible for the existence of mass in other particles, was demonstrated.
