Accident at Armenian Nuclear Power Plant: It was disconnected from the country’s energy system

An accident occurred at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and due to this the NPP was disconnected from the country’s energy system.

Oku.AzAccording to Armenian media reports.

According to information provided earlier by the company “Electric Networks of Armenia”, the automatic operation of the substation of the company “High Voltage Electric Networks” has stopped due to the disconnection of the nuclear power plant from the electrical system.

As a result of the accident, several administrative districts of Yerevan, as well as the Etchmiadzin and Armavir provinces, were cut off. Power supply was later restored.

“The reasons for the incident are being investigated,” Sona Arutyunyan, press secretary of Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, wrote on Facebook.

It should be noted that Armenia has a nuclear power plant with two power units operating on VVER-440 reactors, put into operation in 1976 and 1980. The operation of the NPP was suspended after the Spitak earthquake in March 1989, but the second power unit was restarted in November 1995. The operating period of the existing NPP unit was extended until 2026.

The Armenian government has decided to start the process of extending the operation of the nuclear power plant until 2036.
