The National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) activated this Friday the orange alert (significant risk) in the province of Girona (Catalonia), where cumulative precipitation of 40 liters per square meter in one hour or 100 liters in 12 hours.
These torrential rains have already caused around thirty vehicles to be swept away early in the morning by water on a boulevard in Cadaqués, in the region of Girona, Alt Empordà.
AEMET clarified that the most affected area is the Empordà region, and although intensities of 40 liters were observed in less than an hour, the trend is that they will begin to attenuate throughout the morning. In this way, the orange alert in Girona will be lowered to the yellow alert (risk) from 10:00 a.m. on the peninsula, while an accumulated rain of 20 liters in one hour is expected in parts of Empordà, pre-coastal, south coast and Pyrenees, particularly in the easternmost area.
For the weekend, even if more anticyclonic weather is expected, instability persists in certain areas of the northern Mediterranean but with a tendency to ease on Sunday, it is therefore recommended not to let down your guard and to pay attention to emergency signs.
With the orange alert there is a significant weather risk, with a certain degree of danger for usual activities, and with the yellow alert there is no weather risk for the general population, although there is exists for certain specific activities.
