Liputan6.com, monrovia – Forty -five years after he was killed as a result of a bloody military coup, former Liberia President William Tolbert finally received symbolic funerals with 13 his ministers, which were also executed. The ceremony of this country is considered a bold step towards the national reconciliation and healing of historical wounds.
On April 12, 1980, Tolbert was overthrown and killed as a result of a military coup led by Sergeant Samuel Dow, ending with political dominance for more than a century by the American group of minorities, a descendant of black slaves, which was released from the United States.
Just 10 days after the coup, the military court quickly judged 13 ministers of Tolbert’s office and was brutally executed on the coast near the military barracks in Monrovia. None of their bodies have been found so far.
Nevertheless, at the ceremony held on Tuesday (1/7/2025), each of them received the state, transferring the national flag to the family, and Zalvis shot 21 times.
The current president of Liberia, Joseph Boacai, was also present at the ceremony, describing it as a “national moment of thought”, which is important for efforts to unite the nation.
“These are not just a funeral, but the beginning of healing,” Boacai said, how he quoted Bi -bi -xWednesday (2/7).
Ivett Cheson-Ghotson, the daughter of the former Minister of Justice Joseph Cheson, who was executed, stated that the wounds of the victims families still felt, despite the decades.
“This is the beginning of closing, but reconciliation is not one event,” he said.
