According to the new decision, the open pool in the city of Borontri will be limited exclusively by Swiss citizens during the peak of the tourist season, after a series of incidents assigned to French youth.
The official statement published by the municipality showed that “more than twenty people have not entered the pool since the beginning of this summer from inappropriate behavior, including sexual harassment, the use of an obscene language, swimming in underwear and aggressive reactions when they warn them.”
“The problem is especially concentrated by visitors from France,” said Lionel Mater, responsible for the entertainment sector in the municipality, noting that registered cases of the Swiss language that violated the rules were very limited compared to foreigners.
The decision caused a wave of disputes in the Swiss political and media, since the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) was strongly supported by the right. The parliamentarian Benjamin Fisher described the decision as a “necessary and fair procedure”, saying that “the problem is not limited to a bomont, but rather applies to various regions of the country.”
On the other hand, human rights authorities criticized this decision and considered it discriminatory, while municipal officials defended the procedure as a “temporary preventive solution to maintain security and public order”.
