After Karabakh, Pashinyan’s team is “lowering the bar” for Syunik – opinion – EADaily, September 6, 2024 – Politics News, Caucasus News

The Armenian authorities have begun to lower the level of Syunik, as they did with Artsakh. Everyone remembers the consequences of such a decline, said Arthur Khachikyan, a doctor of political sciences at Stanford University, commenting on the possibility of delegating the security of transport communications with Azerbaijan to a private company.

“These measures have nothing to do with guaranteeing the sovereignty of the country. This in itself means that we are not a sovereign country.

When Putin is going to meet with AliyevHe discusses the future of Armenia with him and says that he will inform the Armenian leadership about it; this already shows that we no longer have any significance. Issues affecting our immediate interests are decided behind our backs.” – said the expert in the program “Review”, reports VERELQ.

Khachikyan He stresses that the very fact of discussing the question of delegating these functions to a private company already means a renunciation of sovereignty:

“These intentions mean that we are starting to lower the bar for Syunik. It is also important to consider several factors here. First of all, which country will this company represent? And who will sign a contract with this company? If this contract is concluded with Armenia and Azerbaijan, this means that Azerbaijan already shares sovereignty with us in this territory.

In other words, if there are any disagreements with this company in the future, the Azerbaijani side has the same right to vote.”

Commenting on the authorities’ assurances that if an agreement is reached, the private company will also protect the part of communications that will pass through Azerbaijani territory, Khachikyan stressed that he had never heard statements from Baku about its desire to take such a step.

Formerly Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mnatsakan Safaryan He said that Armenia is considering the possibility of outsourcing the security of future transport communications with Azerbaijan to private security agencies (PSA).

“Yes, it is possible, but there is no further information at the moment.” – said the diplomat.

According to him, in this case the private security company should also protect the part of the communications that will pass through Azerbaijani territory. At the same time, Safaryan explained that Armenian border guards and customs officers will be present at the border.

Meanwhile, the Iranian ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani, Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ferdowsi Hall of Yerevan State University, he stated that “the dreams and desires of SOME about Armenia, under various names, including the so-called “corridor” (i.e. through Syunik), will not come true.”:

“The territorial integrity of our neighbors is our red line. We promote the territorial integrity, national sovereignty and independence of Armenia. Armenia is our sincere neighbor and we are firmly ready to cooperate and deepen cooperation in all areas.”
