After massive attack in Ukraine, 7 of 9 reactors at nuclear power plants were shut down – Bloomberg

Following this morning’s massive Russian attack, Ukraine has deactivated most of its remaining operating nuclear reactors. Bloomberg reports this.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials working at Ukraine’s nuclear power plants said only two of the nine reactors were generating electricity at full capacity on Sunday. Generation was reduced to between 40% and 90% of capacity at other power units, according to the IAEA statement.

An IAEA team based at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant reported hearing a loud explosion, and staff stationed at the Rivne site said high-voltage power lines were inaccessible. Both objects are located in western Ukraine.

“The country’s energy infrastructure is extremely vulnerable, which directly affects nuclear safety and security,” – said the head of the IAEA Rafael Grossinoting that inspectors are assessing the full extent of the damage.

It should be noted that on Sunday the Russian Armed Forces carried out one of the largest attacks against targets in Ukraine. About 120 cruise, ballistic and aeroballistic missiles and 90 drones were fired from bombers and ships, the Ukrainian Air Force said.
