The future president of the United States, Donald Trump, and his team began working on a plan to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, which was one of his campaign promises. Trump’s goal is to stop the fighting, but not to involve American troops in it, Pravda.Ru writes.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the proposed plan includes establishing a demilitarized zone along the front line. However, it has not yet been decided which country or organization will provide security along this line, although the use of US troops and UN contingents has already been ruled out.
One of the key points of the plan will be kyiv’s commitment not to try to join NATO for the next 20 years. In exchange, Ukraine will retain access to American weapons and military training programs, and European countries will support important peacekeeping initiatives.
“Actually, it sounds good so far. But all this needs to be documented. It’s just that in words it can be anything. What’s more, Trump even said that before taking office he would present some type of regulation plan. The main thing is the territory. The second, of course, is non-entry into NATO. “These are the two main points,” – said the first deputy chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma Svetlana Zhurova.
He also commented on the statements of the former president of Ukraine. Petra Poroshenkothat any compromise on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and exemption from sanctions against Russia should be excluded from Trump’s plan. Poroshenko insists on the inadmissibility of restrictions on the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the priority of the country’s accession.
“Poroshenko or Zelensky will not accept this. But they understand that Trump then tells them: “That means there will be no funding.” And this is a sign. You understand, if the signal is from the United States, it means that other countries will not finance it.” – says Zhurova.
