Albares demands the release of Spaniards “unjustly detained” in Venezuela and asks for EU solidarity

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albaressaid this Monday the “immediate release” of the two Spaniards “unjustly detained” by Venezuela and asked its EU partners for solidarity in this matter.

The situation in Venezuela will once again be on the agenda of the meeting that EU foreign ministers will hold this Monday in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assemblyat the request of Spain, as Albares explained before the start of the event.

The head of diplomacy indicated that he would take advantage of the meeting to discuss with his European colleagues the “unjustifiable situation” of the two Spaniards, “unjustly detained and must be released immediately” and ask for their “solidarity”.

The Venezuelan Minister of the Interior, Diosdado Hairannounced on September 14 that Andrés Martínez Adasme, 32, and José María Basoa Valdovinos, 35, had been arrested in Puerto Ayacucho as part of a conspiracy orchestrated by the opposition and whose objective was to assassinate the president, Nicolas Maduroand other Chavista leaders.

According to Caracas, both were linked to the CNIwhich the government has denied at all times, assuring that they did not work for any public body. Their families reported losing track of them in Inírida (Colombia) on September 2 while they were heading to Puerto Ayacucho and filed a complaint for disappearance with the Ertzaintza on September 9.

The minister said last Friday that The government still has no official confirmation on the identity of the detainees. and the place where they are located, although we have expressly requested it, in accordance with the Vienna Convention, from the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yvan Gilin the conversation they had three days before.

Precisely, the Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, like Albares, is already in New York, where he will be in charge of speaking before the General Assembly on behalf of Venezuela. For the moment, the Foreign Affairs has not indicated whether a meeting between the two is planned, which should in principle coincide with the informal EU-CELAC ministerial meeting.

In addition, Albares plans a four-way meeting with the foreign ministers of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil to address the situation in Venezuela, his department reported.
