Alicante City Council to repair school lift for student in wheelchair carried on mother’s back

The Councilor for Education of the Alicante City Council, Mari Carmen of Spain, assured that the municipality is working on the development of the CEIP Voramar Elevatorwhich should conclude “in the coming days”, after the controversy with the student in a wheelchair carried on his back by his mother to climb the stairs.

This was conveyed by the councilor to the director of the educational center, Ana Fernández, in a meeting also attended by the councilor for infrastructure, Cristina García, after learning that a student in a wheelchair at the Voramar school cannot access the classroom because the elevator has been broken for months, so his mother has to carry him on her back climb the stairs to take him to class.

The councillors met with the school principal with the aim of “joining forces and finding an immediate solution” that would allow the student concerned to have normal access to the facilities, the council said in a statement.

The management of the center informed the city council that the necessary adjustments to temporarily move the classroom of the student with reduced mobility to the ground floor, so that he does not have to use the stairs while the elevator is being repaired.

From Spain, he argued that for the municipality “the most important thing is to guarantee that all the inhabitants of Alicante receive a quality education” and asked “sorry for any mistakes communication that could have taken place in this case. “We have already taken measures to prevent this from happening again,” he stressed.

The mayor appreciated “the good disposition and the desire for maximum collaboration of the management of the center.” “We have joined forces to find a solution as quickly as possible, which is the common goal,” he insisted.

For his part, the former MEP from Alicante of the PSPV-PSOE and member of its Executive Commission Domènec Ruiz Devesa denounced the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament the situation of the child that the mother has to carry daily due to “the permanent breakdown of the elevator at the Voramar school in Alicante.”
