Almeida asks Vinicius for “immediate rectification” of his comments on racism in Spain

Vinicius’ latest speech on Spain and racism has caused a lot of trouble. The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, spoke out against the Brazilian’s message to withdraw the country from hosting the 2030 World Cup “if the situation of racism does not evolve”. The politician demands that the player “rectify immediately” when he considers that he has made a mistake in his words.

“We are all aware that there are racist episodes in society and that we must work hard to eliminate these racist episodes. But it is deeply unfair to Spain and, in particular, to Madrid, to say that we are a racist society and, in addition, to put the celebration of the 2030 World Cup at risk, I ask you to rectify this, you must apologize, know that when there is a racist episode, you will have us all on your side, but you will not have us all on your side when you say that we are racist, because that is not true. When you make a mistake, you must rectify it,” he said.

The mayor argued: “Being an extraordinary footballer does not mean that he cannot do stupid things and this time he did stupid things. Vinicius has the vast majority of Spanish society on his side to fight against racism, but we cannot be on his side when he calls practically all of Spanish society and especially Madrid society racist because I cannot accept it.

“You have to emphasize that you live in one of the most open, welcoming and diverse cities in the world. If there is something that characterizes the city of Madrid, it is that no one is asked where they come from or where they are. “No one is considered or excluded. The fact that he has had to endure some regrettable episodes does not justify calling practically all of Spanish society racist and saying that the 2030 World Cup should not take place,” Almeida said.
