Madrid City Council is studying the possibility of taking up the idea of the former vice-mayor, Begoña Villacís, to place a Ferris wheel in the capital. It will be in Tierno Galván, a green space – the largest in Arganzuela – located south of the capital.
Currently, Almeida’s team is studying whether the land of this park can safely accommodate the attraction. The Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility sector has just awarded a contract worth 58,628.95 euros for a geotechnical study “before determining the opportunity to implement a Ferris wheel in the Enrique Tierno Galván park”, according to the details of the award to which this newspaper has had access.
The news, reported by Cadena Ser, returns to the idea proposed in 2020 by the then deputy mayor, Begoña Villacís, in imitation of the famous London Eye in the British capital. The city council then considered that it should be located in the area around Madrid Río, also in the Arganzuela neighborhood.
The proposal came from a private Valencian company, Circular View, whose project had not been accepted in Valencia, which was then governed by the left. The promoters claimed that the construction of the Ferris wheel would create 1,500 jobs, in addition to the 500 other jobs in the complex and 3,000 indirect jobs.

Since Almeida’s arrival in Cibeles, Tierno Galván Park has become a space for many events that seek accommodation in Madrid. Last Christmas, it hosted the sound and light show Nature Encendida, which privatized a good part of its public space for several weeks, amid complaints from neighbors.
The arrival of good weather has meant that a large festival that took place in Barcelona in other years has also landed in the capital in this green space, always amid complaints from locals.
For years, Tierno Galván has supported the Espacio Delicias on its banks, a land that Adif has rented to a private promoter for the celebration of musicals and other shows in several tents. And soon you will see how your old Imax 3D is reborn, transformed into a space for musicals. The musical promoter Stage has just won the competition for its exploitation for the next 42 years.
