Almodovar in 14 films

The Center for Contemporary Culture Count Duke will host, from September 10 to October 19, a series of 14 films directed by Pedro Almodóvar. This cycle is organized within the framework of the exhibition Madrid, daughter of Almodóvar, dedicated to the filmmaker from La Mancha, open since June in this space of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Area. All screenings, with free admission until capacity is reached, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall.

The film series coincides with the exhibition that explores the relationship between Almodóvar’s iconic films and the city of Madrid. Organized by the General Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums of the City Council, the exhibition has been open since June in Exhibition Room 1 of the Conde Duque and can be visited for free until October 20.

The film that will open the cycle, on Tuesday, September 10, will be The Law of Desire, in which the emblematic scene of Carmen Maura shouting “Riégueme!” appears on the façade of the Conde Duque building. It was also the first film produced by the Almodóvar brothers through their production company El Deseo. After the screening, there will be a discussion about the film with Agustín Almodóvar, moderated by the curator of the exhibition and the cycle, Pedro Sánchez Castrejón.

On Thursday, September 12, Entre Tinieblas will be screened. On Saturday, September 14, it will be the turn of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. The film Átame will be screened on Tuesday, September 17, and on Thursday, September 19, it will be the turn of Tacones Distancia. That same week, on Saturday, September 21, it will be La flor de mi secreto. The following week, Flesh Trémula, All About My Mother and Hable con ella will be the films scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, Thursday, September 26 and Saturday, September 28, respectively.

Already in October, Volver will be screened on Thursday 3rd. On Saturday 5th, it will be the turn of What Did I Do to Deserve This?, coinciding this month with the 40th anniversary of its premiere. They will close the cycle, the following week, Broken Embraces, on Tuesday 8th; Juliet, on Thursday 17th; and Pain and Glory, on Saturday 19th.

An exhibition to learn about the filmmaker from La Manche

This series of films, organized by the Department of Exhibitions of the General Directorate of Libraries, Archives and Museums, is part of the exhibition Madrid, daughter of Almodóvar, inaugurated in June and which will be open until October 20. It is part of the programming of the Conde Duque Center for Contemporary Culture and is exhibited in Exhibition Room 1.

Madrid, Almodóvar Girl includes more than two hundred photographs taken from the director’s 23 films, which cover various places and monuments of the city of Madrid through the eyes of the filmmaker. Images such as those of Carmen Maura or Alaska dressed in chulapas in an apartment on Doctor Esquerdo Street in Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Ordinary Girls, or the cornice of the Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande in What Have I Done to Deserve This? These are just a few examples.

The exhibition material is mainly graphic, provided by the production company El Deseo and selected by the curator Pedro Sánchez Castrejón, author of Todo sobre mi Madrid. A walk through Almodóvar’s Madrid and responsible for various film tourism activities and projects. The exhibition also includes fifty original pieces, among which the horizon forlos used in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) stand out.

From the municipal collection, the poster of the legendary concert of Almodóvar & MacNamara, Dinarama + Alaska, in the Rock-Ola room (1983), preserved in the Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as periodicals from the newspaper library are exhibited. The cinematic tourist map of Almodóvar’s Madrid route is also presented, with 200 filming locations.
