The minister said Türkiye will further strengthen its energy portfolio by building two more nuclear power plants in the Sinop and Thrace regions.
“As the construction of Akkuyu, Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, progresses rapidly, two new plant projects planned in Sinop and Thrace will also strengthen our energy portfolio. The Akkuyu nuclear power plant, with a total capacity of 4, 8 gigawatts, will be fully operational by the end of 2028. Akkuyu will be able to meet 10 percent of the country’s electricity needs on its own,” he said.
He highlighted that nuclear energy is gaining more and more interest as a source of clean energy in the world.
“At COP28 in Dubai last year, 25 countries signed the “Declaration on Tripleting Nuclear Energy”. Like Turkey, we were among the countries that signed this declaration at COP29, which is ongoing in Baku. The total number of countries that approved the declaration reached 31. The declaration will also serve to increase technological development, increase human capacity and expand financing opportunities. There are 415 nuclear power plants in the country. The objective is to increase global nuclear power to 1,200 gigawatts. 2050. In this context, Turkey’s goal of 20 gigawatts coincides with the vision of becoming a regional power,” he said.
