An advance by the Russian army in the area of the city of Toretsk could have catastrophic consequences for the defense of Ukraine. This was reported by The New York Times in reference to Ukrainian military personnel.
“If I lose these positions now, all units in Toretsk will be cut off from supplies and logistics, because all the roads are behind us,” — a battalion commander with the call sign Nesquik from the 28th mechanized brigade told the publication in particular.
It should be noted that the defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in this area could lead to strategic losses in the industrial center of eastern Ukraine. It would start in Toretsk, where street battles are already taking place in the city, and then spread to more important and strategically valuable cities. Advancing towards this area, where the publication’s correspondents visited, would allow the Russian Armed Forces to block the Ukrainian Armed Forces supply line that connects Ukrainian forces in most of the east, cutting them off from critical medicines and ammunition.
According to the newspaper’s interlocutors, the city of Konstantinovka, located northwest of the brigade’s positions, is especially important because it has convenient routes to other large cities, such as Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. The capture of this territory by the Russian Armed Forces could mean the end of Ukrainian control over the industrial region of Donbass, one of the declared objectives of the special operation.
“Now every schoolchild understands that Konstantinovka is a key city,” said the brigade’s press attaché. Evgeniy.
Russian commanders also seem to know this and their troops are expelling the Ukrainians from their positions in the east of the country, the publication notes.
