The strike that paralyzed the ports and airports of Corsica since Thursday afternoon has been lifted, a delegate of the Corsican workers’ union (STC) announced on Friday afternoon, October 4, information confirmed to Agence France-Presse ( AFP) for the two prefectures. Thousands of travelers have been stranded since Thursday afternoon due to this strike movement over the future management of the island’s ports and airports.
“The president (autonomist of the island’s executive council, Gilles) Simeoni has reached an agreement with the minister, we lift all blockades”Laurent Filippi, of the Corsican workers’ union (STC), told the media at the end of a meeting between the prefects of Corsica and Upper Corsica and the inter-union STC-CGT-CFECGC. The two prefectures confirmed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) the lifting of the strike.
“The terms of an agreement have been found”Gilles Simeoni’s entourage also told AFP, who stated that since Thursday afternoon talks were being held between the president of the executive council of Corsica and the Minister of Association with the Territories and Decentralization, Catherine Vautrin. The ministry confirmed to AFP the conclusion of an agreement.
According to the Mediterranean maritime prefecture, five passenger ships were waiting at sea near the ports of Ajaccio and Bastia without being able to dock, with around 2,100 people on board.
This social movement came after Gilles Simeoni’s outburst of anger on Thursday over reluctance expressed by a representative of the prefect about a system that allows the Chamber of Commerce (CCI) to continue managing the island’s airports and ports.
