On the eleventh day of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, an event called “Small Island States (SIDS) and Ecosystems” was held in Baku Communities under Climate Change” Zone.
Oku.Az The event, moderated by Vanuatu’s Special Envoy to COP29, Ali Serim, explored the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in addressing the growing impacts of climate change.
Among the speakers are Baroness Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Minister of the Interior, Climate Change and Environment of Tuvalu, Maina Talia, Director of the Global Risk and Resilience Program of the Center “ODI Global”, Rebecca Nadin , Counselor of Palau’s mission to the UN participated Angelique Puponno, of the Space Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Murad Jamalov, head of the processing department thematic center of the Geographic Information Systems Center of “Azerkosmos”.
The session discussed how the degradation of natural ecosystems (coral reefs, mangroves and coastal wetlands) threatens both biodiversity and the livelihoods of indigenous communities.
At the same time, the social and economic consequences of climate change for these states are also examined, including migration, loss of livelihoods and the weakening of economies based on marine and coastal resources.
