An Islamist who planned to hack Bundeswehr soldiers to death has been arrested in Germany.

Bavarian police have arrested a 27-year-old Syrian who was planning to attack Bundeswehr soldiers with two machetes, the Welt newspaper reported today, 13 September, citing the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office.

According to law enforcement officials, a Syrian refugee was planning to carry out an armed attack on Bundeswehr soldiers in the Upper Franconia region. The man allegedly wanted to “kill as many” soldiers as possible with two 40cm machetes during his lunch break in the town centre of Hof. The Syrian had already purchased edged weapons and was planning the details of the attack.

Investigators believe the 27-year-old is a supporter of radical Islamic ideology. Police arrested the man on Thursday near the town of Hof. The suspect is currently in custody. The case is being investigated by the Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism of the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Syrian’s arrest came just weeks after the attack at the Solingen festival. The attacker also turned out to be a native of Syria with radical Islamist beliefs. The attack killed three people. The series of attacks sparked a new round of discussions in Germany about the need to tighten immigration laws.

Previously EADaily reported that the head of the German Interior Ministry Nancy Pen The US has ordered the introduction of controls at all land borders of the country starting from 16 September. It should be noted that the new regime will last for six months and will aim to combat illegal migration.
