The 53-hectare Mesyatsev Island in Russia has completely disappeared from the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
Oku.Az reports that this was reported on the website of the Russian Geographical Society.
According to Alexey Kucheyko, associate professor of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), who carried out the relevant observation under his direction, the missing field was located on the territory of the Yeva-Liv island. He said that Mesyatsev Island has completely melted. Kucheyko pointed out that for this reason it will be necessary to make corrections to the navigation maps.
According to information, in August 2015, the area of Mesyatsev Island reached about 53 hectares. In August of this year, its surface area was already 3 hectares and a month later the island disappeared.
Scientists attribute this to global warming, which is causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise. This causes erosion of the coastline, causing the disappearance of some geographical features.
It was also reported that melting Arctic sea ice could cause cold weather in northern Europe.
