Andalusia is the community that devotes the highest percentage of its GDP to financing public universities

He Secretary General of Universities of the Department of University, Research and Innovation, Ramón Herrerahighlighted that Andalusia “is the autonomous community with the highest percentage of GDP allocated to the financing of public universities, around 0.9%”, since he asked the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to “contribute to reaching 1% of GDP to finance these academic institutions”.

This was revealed Herrera after his participation in Madrid in the meeting of the Working Commission to “design structural and economic measures aimed at achieving the objective of 1% of GDP intended for financing Spanish public universities”, established by the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU)where, he insisted, “we have defended that this Commission at least serves to ensure that funding from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities supports the achievement of this objective”, as detailed in a note .

In addition, the Secretary General of Universities explained that this commission aims to “adapt” the financing models of the communities to what is established by LOSU and, in this sense, he emphasized that Andalusia “already has a financing model for the Andalusian public universities were unanimously agreed” with the agents involved and this gives “financial security, stability and greater autonomy to the universities”.

In this sense, he recalled that the ten academic institutions will have at least 1,888 million in 2025, of which the university funding model represents 1,726.4 million euros, which represents an increase of 26% compared to 2018.

The Working Commission to improve the financing of public universities was created last February and all the autonomous communities are part of it. In addition, it includes a representation of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE)as well as with the representation of unions, Social Councils of Spanish universities and students.
