Àngels Martínez Castells, activist and former Member of Parliament, has died

Àngels Martínez Castells, public health activist and deputy of the Catalunya Sí Que Es Pot group in Parliament between 2015 and 2017), died this Sunday. Her journalist friend Rosa María Artal and Albano-Dante Fachín, who shared a parliamentary group with her during this legislature, reported the death on social networks.

Àngels Martínez Castells, born in Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona) in 1948 and holder of a doctorate in economics, had chaired a public health defence organisation and participated in social movements linked to 15-M.

Her political career is linked to the PSUC, the PCC, the Assembly of Catalonia – she was one of its founders -, the CCOO of Catalonia, Esquerra Unida i Alterantiva (EUiA) and Podem, a party that participated in the electoral coalition Catalunya Sí Que. Es Pot.

During the plenary session of October 7, 2017, controversy arose when some Spanish flags were removed from the seats of the PP deputies, who, together with the ciutadans parliamentarians, had left the room to protest the approval of the Law on Legal Transitional and Foundation of the Republic, later suspended by the Constitutional Court and which never entered into force.

Martínez Castells explained that the removal of the flags was a political act and that if the Spanish flag had been republican, he would not have removed it from the seats.

On social media, political leaders such as former Catalan presidents Carles Puigdemont and Quim Torra and Junts general secretary Jordi Turull mourned Martínez Castells’ death.
