Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that the measure will come into force after the Olympic and Paralympic Games: the speed on the ring road will be limited to 50 km/h from 1Ahem October, confirmed on Monday, September 9 on RTL.
Paris City Hall announced at the end of November 2023 its desire to reduce the speed limit from 70 to 50 km/h, as well as to reserve one of the lanes for car-sharing, a revolution that was supposed to protect the environment but which has since sparked a lively political controversy. The ring road, one of Europe’s main urban axes, is used every day by 1.2 million vehicles, mostly from the Île-de-France region, and 80% of which are driven alone.
The maximum speed limit on this 35-kilometre stretch of road that has surrounded the capital since 1973 had already been increased from 90 km/h to 80 km/h in 1993 and then to 70 km/h in 2014. Since 2021, the speed limit has also been limited to 30 km/h on most streets in the capital.
