Another country has applied to join South Africa’s case against Israel.

Chile today officially requested to participate in the proceedings initiated by South Africa against Israel before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

In June this year, Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced that his country plans to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Chile’s foreign ministry has previously called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the recognition of two states and an end to the “occupation” of the Palestinian territories. It also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren previously said the move was in line with the South American country’s historic position on the Middle East: “Chile will intervene in the case brought by South Africa against Israel before the ICJ, in accordance with Article 63 of its Statute, within the framework of the UN Convention on Genocide.”

The Chilean president also described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “barbaric.”

On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel, citing its involvement in “acts of genocide” against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. This move was supported by dozens of countries, which became a historic precedent in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

South Africa submitted an 84-page dossier to the court containing evidence that Israel killed thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and created conditions “conducive to their physical destruction,” which is considered a crime of “genocide” against them.

Previously, Cursor wrote that South Africa’s chief sheikh made an anti-Semitic statement.
