Another European country has expressed its willingness to arrest Netanyahu.

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier affirmed that Paris will fulfill its obligations in accordance with the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The decision arises from allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during Israel’s campaign in the Gaza Strip. The order was issued on November 21 and also covers former Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

“We strictly comply with our international obligations. The ICC acts independently and France does not comment on its decisions,” Barnier emphasized at a meeting of the National Assembly.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault also announced Paris’ intention to comply with international law in the event of Netanyahu’s arrival, although he stressed that the situation is still “hypothetical.”

Other European leaders made similar statements. German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock confirmed that the German government will follow the “principle of the rule of law.”

A similar view was expressed in Belgium, where Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter emphasized the need to implement ICC decisions “so that war crimes do not go unpunished.” Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said The Hague would follow the court’s orders despite the possible diplomatic consequences.

Where Netanyahu can’t go

Of the 125 countries that recognize the authority of the ICC, the vast majority have committed to carrying out the arrest warrant against Netanyahu and Galant. The list includes almost all European countries, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, as well as countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Among the countries that do not recognize the powers of the ICC are such important powers as the United States, Russia, China and India. However, even in their airspace, a plane carrying Netanyahu or Galant could face difficulties if it heads to a country committed to complying with the court’s decision.

Previously, Kursor wrote that Italy reacted to the ICC’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Galant.
