On November 1, it became known that Armenia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in 2026. The Secretariat of the Convention published information about this on the social network “X” .
This decision was made based on the results of COP16 held in Colombia. COP17 is a pretty important event. Holding such a conference in Armenia, where instability in internal politics, tensions between Russia and the West and the influence of various forces prevail, raises serious questions. How did the countries of the world show so much confidence in Armenia?
Even though Armenia’s candidacy happily announced having obtained 65 votes, studies show that Yerevan got this opportunity mainly with the active support of the EU, especially France and the Organization of La Francophonie. This is not an accident.
First of all, the West cannot accept the holding of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held in Azerbaijan in about a week, and is trying to eclipse the reputation Azerbaijan international. .
In addition, Azerbaijan will host several major international events in the coming years, including the 13th session of the World Urbanization Forum in 2025-2026, the 16th Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 2026, and the International Conference on Space Technologies . will be held in Baku. Thus, Azerbaijan is increasing its importance in the region and in the world by hosting international events one after another. This causes concern in some Western circles and encourages their provocative actions.
In such a situation, countries like France take every opportunity to put Armenia on the agenda by supporting Armenia, which is considered the “weakest link” in the region. This support from Armenia is manifested not only in the military and information spheres, but also in diplomacy.
It is interesting that the West’s support for Armenia at COP17 comes after the failed test in Georgia. Although France and the United States tried to intervene in the parliamentary elections in Georgia and bring the opposition to power, this did not happen and the Georgian people preferred stability. Therefore, the West is trying to gain influence in the region by supporting Armenia this time through COP17.
Meanwhile, considering the euphoria created in the Armenian media, it is important to emphasize the different importance of COP29 and COP17. COP17 covers issues related to biodiversity and ecosystem protection, but COP29 is a much broader event. At this conference, which is at the forefront of the global fight against climate change, countries discuss their obligations to reduce carbon emissions, financing mechanisms and support for vulnerable countries.
The fact is that France and other supporters of Armenia continue to provide resources for its hosting of COP17. In the future, investments in Armenia are expected to be made in various forms.
A noteworthy question arises: Why is the West, while trying to upstage the UN conference in Azerbaijan, making every effort to successfully organize another conference of the same organization in Armenia? This is another example of Western double standards.
