Antimicrobial Use Guide well received at FDI World Congress

The Spanish delegation of the General Council of Dentists, headed by the president, Dr. Oscar Castro Reinoactively participated in a new edition of the World Congress of the International Dental Federation (FDI), which was held in Istanbul last week. During this prestigious event, the General Council of Dentists presented to the FDI General Assembly Guide to the Use of Antimicrobials in Dentistrywhich received an exceptional welcome among the participants.

The guide, supervised by the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN) of the Ministry of Health, is the result of the collaboration of six Spanish scientific societies: AEDE, SECIB, SECOM and CyC, SEMO, SEOENE and SEPA. During the congress, Dr. Óscar Castro met with representatives of dental associations from several Latin American countries interested in the material that will be provided by the General Council of Dentists with the aim of promoting the appropriate use of antimicrobials at an international level.

“The outcome of the FDI World Congress is very positive. We analyzed and discussed current issues in dentistry, such as the use of artificial intelligenceoral health in patients with special needs or ethics in professional practice,” said Dr. Castro. “The role of the Spanish delegation was very relevant, mainly thanks to our campaign for the correct use of antibiotics, which was enthusiastically received and which we will gladly hand over to Latin American dental associations that request it. This campaign will be essential to improve the antimicrobial treatments prescribed in consultation, avoiding resistance.”

New IDE Statements of Principles

One of the highlights of the congress was FDI Approves Eight New Statements of Principleswhich will soon be available on the website of the General Council of Dentists of Spain. These statements address key topics such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry
  • Reducing sugar consumption
  • Oral health and non-communicable diseases
  • Ethics in Dentistry
  • Early childhood caries
  • Oral health in patients with special needs
  • Dental laboratory technicians
  • Use of laser in dentistry

Spanish proposal to the ORE

Within the European Regional Organization (ERO), the European section of the FDI, the Spanish delegation presented a proposal, led by Dr. Óscar Castro, for Spanish to be recognized as an official language of the organization, alongside English, French and German. The proposal was approved, marking an important step for the representation of the Spanish language in the international dental field.

“The recognition of Spanish as an official language of the ORE, which we have already requested in 2023, gives our country and our language the importance they deserve,” added Dr. Castro.

Future code of ethics in dentistry in Europe

During the same ORE meeting, the green light was given to the development of a Code of Ethics for Dental Practice in Europe, a highly relevant project that will be analyzed and voted on in May 2025. This Code will be a fundamental pillar of the ethical policy and regulation of the dental profession on the continent.

The FDI World Congress reaffirmed the commitment of the General Council of Dentists of Spain to global oral health and the defense of ethical and scientific standards in dental practice.
