A new rain storm affects several regions in the north and south of Catalonia this Wednesday. The authorities’ greatest concern is focused on the Tarragona region. To reduce mobility and prevent population movements, the Generalitat has closed several roads, including the AP-7 highway.
Mobility restrictions cut off the AP-7 at Amposta northbound. Vehicles are diverted via exit 42, which causes a delay of approximately six kilometers. The same highway is closed to the south in Altafulla, with diversions at exit 32 generating around seven kilometers of delay, according to Servei Català de Trànsit (STC).
Catalonia maintains flood alert given the forecast of intense rains this Wednesday, particularly in the Tarragonese regions of Tarragonès, Montsià, Baix Ebre, Ribera d’Ebre and Baix Camp, where the Generalitat has limited mobility and suspended classes for 128,000 students.
The C-14 in Alcover is also closed; the N-340 to Torredembarra; access to the A-27 at the crossroads between kilometers 13 and 23 (El Rourell – Valls Nord); the N-240 tunnel towards Tarragona and access to Coll de Lilla towards Tarragona
The forecast of heavy rain has caused train services to be reduced to ensure the safety of passengers. The R15 line runs only between Barcelona and Reus, on the R16 there are speed limits between Tortosa and L’aldea and the R17 has suspended the shuttle service between Tarragona and Salou.
The restrictions are in effect from 6:00 a.m. this Wednesday and will be in effect until midnight. Citizens living in the affected areas received an alert from Civil Protection on their cell phones this Tuesday, because in these regions 100 liters can accumulate in 24 hours.
In a resolution, the Generalitat imposed restrictions on mobility, with teleworking as the norm whenever possible and travel only for essential services.
Classes were suspended for 128,864 students from 439 educational centers in the regions and the Rovira i Virgili University (URV) was also closed. Non-urgent health and judicial activities have also been canceled, with the exception of custody courts.
In addition to the five regions affected by the restrictions, the government called for caution in the face of bad weather on the Catalan coast, particularly in the northern and southern ends of Catalonia, due to heavy rain and waves. In these areas, the Generalitat has asked citizens to avoid approaching beaches, torrents or areas prone to flooding.
