Arca presents an appeal against the construction of a restaurant on the wall of Es Baluard de Sant Pere

The Association for the Revitalization of Ancient Centers (Ark) has filed a legal appeal against the construction of a restaurant in Es Baluard de Sant Pere, in Palma, considering that it is not compatible with respect for a “first-rate” heritage space.

As the association regretted in a press release, it tried to resolve the problem by administrative and political means, but the will of the Administration was “zero”. In this sense, they accused the Palma City Hall, the Government, the Consell de Mallorca and the management of the Es Baluard Museum of “not having known or wanted to defend general interests by protecting heritage and avoiding its perverse use”.

Although they admitted not knowing the path that legal recourse could take, Arca assured that, in any case, they would maintain their recriminations against a way of acting that they consider “intransigent and inflexible”.

“We consider the political management to be disastrous. They had the opportunity to rectify, because the problem had been inherited from previous leadersnow in opposition. But they did not want to do it, even though they verbally said that they agreed with our opinion,” they lamented.

The “invasive and depersonalizing” works for the construction of the Es Baluard de Sant Pere restaurant are progressing quickly and are on the way to transforming this piece of wall into a place with “a ‘becah club’ aesthetic”, according to Arca.

Concretely, with the installation of a wooden platform between 70 and 80 centimeters or a small pool “which they euphemistically call a sheet of water”. “It is incomprehensible that the heritage technicians of the Consell de Mallorca have given their approval to a project that includes elements so foreign to the walls of Palma,” they criticized.

“The irregular practices of the concession company which forced the cessation and withdrawal of the works a few months ago have in reality been rewarded with a project even worse than the previous one, since the visual barrier effect will be greater because they will gain height,” they say. added.

From ARCA, they recalled that they had been warning for more than two years about the negative effects of the project and that, although they had proposed alternatives and did not oppose the construction of an establishment but that it rather has a “depersonalized” aesthetic, “It was of no use.” “It seems that good manners often do not serve citizens,” they judged, reports Europa Press.

Collection of signatures

In June this year, the Association for the Revitalization of Ancient Centers (Arca) began collecting signatures to avoid the Es Baluard beach club and thus modify the terrace model that it wants to allow in this space.

Arca then indicated in a statement that it had asked the three administrations that are part of the board of directors of Es Baluard (Govern, Consell and Palma City Council) rethink the terrace model that they want to authorize to avoid an impactin his opinion, “unnecessary” and “aggressive”.

In particular, he asked the three administrations to take the necessary measures to achieve a terrace “without dividing walls, awnings, large planters, unnecessary furniture and appropriation of a public space of great heritage value.
