Argentine President Javier Miley fired Foreign Minister Diana Mondino after she supported a UN resolution calling for the lifting of sanctions on Cuba. This was announced by the official representative of the Argentine leader Manuel Adorni on October 30.
“The new head of the Argentine Foreign Ministry is Gerardo Wertein“, – he wrote on his page X.
Prior to his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Werthein served as Argentina’s Ambassador to the United States.
As Infocielo noted, the decision to fire Mondino raises questions about the direction of Argentina’s foreign policy and its impact on future diplomatic relations.
That same day, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on the United States to lift sanctions against Cuba, which was supported by the Argentine representation before the world organization, Izvestia clarifies.
In particular, the resolution calls for “the end of the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba.” The proposal received 187 votes in favor. Only the United States and Israel voted against the resolution, while Moldova abstained. Thus, for the first time during Mileya’s presidential term, Argentina did not support the United States and Israel, writes the Buenos Aires Times newspaper.
