Canada, as the founding state of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has reaffirmed its commitment to comply with all decisions of the court. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly highlighted the importance of respect for international law and accountability. He also highlighted the catastrophic situation in Gaza and emphasized the need for a truce and the release of the hostages.
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said his country was prepared to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he arrived in Ireland under an ICC warrant. He noted that Ireland fully supports international courts and their decisions.
On November 21, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity against Gaza’s civilian population. The court finds that since October 2023 they have deliberately deprived Gazans of basic needs such as food, water, medicine and electricity.
The ICC decision aroused support in the EU: the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, confirmed the mandatory execution of the orders by the member countries of the Union.
