Iranian Vice President for Strategic Affairs Javad Zarif addressed Donald Trump and called on the US president-elect to abandon the maximum pressure policy that became the basis of the US strategy towards Iran during his first presidential term. According to Zarif, Iran has significantly increased its level of uranium enrichment since the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018, from 3.5% to 60%.
Zarif called Trump a “calculating man” and asked him to objectively weigh the consequences of past policies. “Trump must calculate and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this disastrous policy, deciding whether he wants it to continue or change,” emphasized the Iranian vice president. He also added that Trump now has the opportunity to demonstrate his willingness to adopt new approaches and abandon the flawed policies of the past.
Zarif, who previously served as foreign minister and helped negotiate the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), said Iran is ready for constructive dialogue as long as the new US administration reviews sanctions and the previous strategy. Let us remember that in 2019 the United States imposed personal sanctions against Zarif, calling him an “illegitimate representative of Iran.”
