Askar Akayev was denied the return of the status of former president

The Kyrgyz parliament has decided to reject the request of former head of the republic Askar Akaev to restore his status as ex-president, according to the 24 kg news agency.

Earlier, Akaev appealed to the Kyrgyz legislature with an official request to have his status as ex-president restored to him. The letter was sent to the parliamentary committee on constitutional legislation, government structure, judicial and legal issues and regulations. After considering the message, the committee members recommended that the deputies refuse to satisfy the request. The MPs supported the proposal.

Askar Akayev was President of Kyrgyzstan from 1990 to 2005. On 24 March 2005, as a result of the so-called “Tulip Revolution”, he was overthrown and fled to Russia, where he lives to this day.
