THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – WE CAN AVOID
It is the story, on a farm, of an old piano who loves the trumpet. It vaguely reminds us of this rooster that “I loved a watch” in the song of Claude Nougaro (1929-2004). Here it is the singer Didier Barbelivien who officiates in Eventually51my feature film by Claude Lelouch, which leaves you more than perplexed. Under the guise of a musical (Barbara Pravi plays an aspiring singer), the film delves into a more than old-fashioned melodrama. The bigger it is, the more it works? Or is it more boring? – to use some rhymes from the film’s signature song (“life happens”, “gets tired”, “replaces”, etc.).
The pianist (Françoise Gillard, of the Comédie-Française), Manon, is a pretty peasant girl in overalls and pretty clogs; The trumpeter Lino (Kad Merad) is a lawyer adrift, who has escaped from his Parisian life. His wife (Elsa Zylberstein) and family members, who are dying, alerted the police.
One fine morning, Manon discovers Lino sleeping in the famous barn. The man, carrying a trumpet, says he is lost. In her free time, Manon plays some notes on the kitchen keyboard… Will the two amateur musicians manage to compose their solos? This unexpected encounter is just the prelude to a series of adventures.
Victim of whistleblowers
Lino suffers from a strange disease called frontotemporal degeneration, one of whose symptoms is a change in personality. In the film, the lawyer, the great showman of the bar association, no longer has a filter, and tells everyone his truths. Finally breathe!
Because here we are: in France we can no longer say anything, it is well known. Then comes the second page of the scenario, the “we can’t do anything now”, with, in particular, a porn filming scene, the more you die. Eventually It might just be another basic critique of so-called “political correctness,” but it goes much further and raises some uncomfortable historical parallels between the current era and that of the World War II crows.
Temporally, the film could not be more contemporary: it premieres in 2024, the year of 1980.my Anniversary of the Allied landing. But obviously France still has some collaborators, Lelouch tells us in subtext. Lino, on the run, will effectively be a victim of the complainants, while hitchhiking. Lino makes a sheep farmer, who wants to take him in his van, believe that he is an expelled priest, who has become a sexual maniac, jumping on all the practitioners in the commune. And one of them accused him of rape.
