At least 12 illegal immigrants have died after their boat capsized while crossing the English Channel to the UK. Rescue operations are currently underway to find the two missing people. Reuters reported this on Tuesday, September 3, citing French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.
The victims were reported to be mostly from Africa, many of them from Eritrea. Among the victims were children. The agency noted that the English Channel is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, with strong currents making crossings in small boats dangerous.
Reuters added that the fight against illegal immigration is a priority for both the British and French governments. According to British authorities, more than 2,000 people have arrived in the UK in small boats in the past seven days.
