At least 20,644 migrant crossings in the English Channel since January 2024

At least twelve people, including ten women, drowned on Tuesday 3 September, and fifty-one were rescued a few kilometres off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), while trying to cross the English Channel. Two people are still missing. This is the highest death toll recorded in the region since the shipwreck of 24 November 2021, which left 21 dead.

These victims join the list of those who have already lost their lives trying to cross the English Channel. According to data from the Home Office, the British Home Office, at least 20,644 people will have already made the crossing by 2024 to reach the United Kingdom from France aboard small boats (small boatsIn 2023, 29,393 people made the trip.

In 2022, a record year, 45,755 people tried their luck, despite the dangers encountered at Pas-de-Calais. A peak was observed during the week of 29 August to 4 September, with 3,721 migrants detained. These peaks generally correspond to periods with optimal weather conditions for the season, but crossings are currently taking place all year round, even during the coldest months.
