At least 40 dead and 70 injured in Israeli bombing of Khan Younis humanitarian zone

The Gaza Civil Defense reported At least 40 Palestinians killed and 70 others injured after an Israeli army bombardment on Mawasi, an area designated as humanitarian in the city of Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, against allegations “camouflaged” positions of Hamas.

“Air Force fighter jets recently attacked, under the direction of the Shin Bet, the AMAN – Military Intelligence Directorate – and the Southern Command, terrorists from the Hamas terrorist organization who were operating in a command and control complex camouflaged in the Khan Yunis humanitarian camp. “The terrorists encouraged and carried out terrorist plots against the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and the citizens of Israel,” read a statement published by the Israeli army on its social media account X collected by Europe Press.

Furthermore, they assured that “many measures to reduce the risk of harm to civilians” such as the use of precision weapons, aerial surveillance and intelligence.

The IDF also denounced that this incident is “another example of the systematic use by terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip of the civilian population and infrastructure, including humanitarian space” to carry out their activities.

However, local sources consulted by the Palestinian newspaper Filastin reported that some 20 tents set up in the area “have completely disappeared” and that “entire families” were buried under the sand in what they describe as a new “massacre”.

Israel launched a bloody offensive against the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas attacks on October 7, which left 1,200 dead and 240 kidnapped. Since then, authorities in Gaza have recorded the deaths of nearly 41,000 Palestinians, as well as more than 690 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as a result of actions by Israeli security forces and settlers.
