At least 50 people arrested in Morocco for planning mass entry into Ceuta this weekend

At least 50 people arrested on the Moroccan side of the border with Ceuta in recent days for planning and inciting a mass jump over the border fence.

According to sources from the Civil Guard revealed to EL ESPAÑOL, these events occurred at the El Tarajal pass, which connects the autonomous city with the town of Castillejos. Calls have been made in recent days for a mass entry, and that is why hundreds of people were already heading en masse to this point of Moroccan territory to try to cross the border this weekend.

Sources consulted at the Ministry of the Interior and the Civil Guard, as well as the National Police, indicate that they are aware of all the movements of their Moroccan counterparts, who have carried out the arrests in recent days, in order to dissuade those who planned the jump.

The Interior is supervising the work of the Moroccan authorities, who have intensified their action in Castillejos with checks, searches and intelligence work in the area. In addition, Morocco has put in place more deterrents such as fences and increased military presence in the area as a measure to prevent such attempts from being carried out.

The Civil Guard is activated for the next few days, in order to thwart any attempt to access Spanish territory. They are under surveillance, and in permanent contact with the Royal Gendarmerie of Mohamed VI.

Arrests

Most of the arrests took place in Tangier. Most of them happened after Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGST) detected many people sharing content on the Internet. Hundreds of people were incited to a mass illegal emigration for this weekend.

The detainees, some of whom were minors, posted messages on social media inciting them to collectively attack the security barrier between Morocco and the Spanish city of Ceuta on September 15, the source said.

The migration crisis has worsened, leaving the Canary Islands in a real “emergency” situation. But also in Ceuta. The arrival of irregular immigrants to the autonomous city via the land border with Morocco tripled compared to 2023 data.

According to Interior data, the cumulative number of land entries into the autonomous North African city in 2023 at this point in the summer was 650 people. During the same period of the 2024 financial year, Ceuta was overwhelmed by a total of 1,917 immigrant arrivals.

In addition, Morocco stopped the arrival of thousands of people during the same month.
