French authorities reported on Sunday that “several immigrants” died over the past 24 hours i have been trying to cross the English sleeve heading to the United Kingdom. French media, such as BFM TV and Le Figaro, report at least 8 deaths.
This is the second episode of shipwrecks of this type in September, after the one 12 deaths recorded on September 3 in similar circumstances. By 2024, at least 37 people had already died trying to cross from France to the United Kingdom.
The Maritime Prefecture of La Manche and the North specified that in total, 200 people were rescued of various wrecks in an area on alert due to strong sea currents. Police and maritime rescue services have been tracking 18 vessels attempting to reach the United Kingdom.
By 2024, the British authorities calculate that at least 22,000 immigrants and asylum seekers reached the UK coast from northern France, usually from areas near the towns of Calais and Dunkirk.
