The United States Department of Justice has filed charges against Iranian citizen Farhad Shakeri, suspected of plotting to assassinate Donald Trump, as well as preparing a terrorist attack against Israeli tourists in Sri Lanka. According to the FBI, Shakeri, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), recruited two American citizens and promised them large sums of money in exchange for participating in the plot.
According to the indictment, Shakeri was tasked with organizing an attack on Israeli tourists in Sri Lanka’s popular tourist area – Arugam Bay. The operation was scheduled for October 2024 and included the use of firearms, including AK-47 assault rifles. One of the conspirators, known as CC-2, would monitor the Bay area and report attack opportunities.
Amid warnings from the United States and Israel, Sri Lankan authorities arrested several suspects, including CC-2, who was conducting reconnaissance of the attack. The indictment also alleges a plot to assassinate two Jewish American citizens whom Iranian agents described as “Israel supporters.”
The US Embassy in Sri Lanka and Israel’s National Security Headquarters have issued warnings to their citizens warning them to avoid visiting Arugam Bay.
