Alexander Lukashenko said attempts to annex Belarus to Russia could lead to war.
Lukashenko spoke about this in an interview with Russian media.
He noted that in Russian “high circles” there are forces that want to see Belarus as part of Russia, but such actions, according to him, will lead to conflict.
“Some people in Russia’s upper circles are eager to annex Belarus, but an attempt to do so will turn into a war,” Lukashenko said.
Lukashenko emphasized that the Union State already allows both countries to build close relations without the need to unify into a single state.
The Belarusian leader also revealed that Russia has more than once offered Belarus to join its membership, citing economic advantages and willingness to provide assistance. However, Lukashenko considers such ideas impossible and unrealistic, adding that they threaten war.
Lukashenko stressed the importance of taking into account modern realities and avoiding the thinking of the Middle Ages, when the appropriation of territories was a common practice.
He called for responsible politics and warned that in today’s world it is important to think about the consequences instead of seeking dominance at any cost.
