Authorities are examining new evidence that would support the Menéndez brothers’ version

Los Angeles authorities are studying new tests this could lead to a release or new trial of Lyle and Erik MenendezBeverly Hills brothers were convicted of murdering their parents thirty years ago, the local prosecutor said Thursday.

According to Gascón, the new review could lead to several outcomes: the brothers could be released immediately or receive a new sentence or a new trial. Gascon said he has an open mind on the matter. “We do not want to believe or disbelieve this information,” Gascón said at a press conference.

“But we are here to tell you that we have a moral and ethical obligation to look at what is presented to us and make a decision.” The Menéndez brothers asked to have their convictions overturned last year.

Thursday, his lawyer, Marc Geragospraised Gascón for what he called “a bold step.” “I think we’ve gotten to a point where any reasonable person looking at this case believes it should be excluded,” he added.
