Works to bury the A-5
The works of burial of the A-5 highway and the construction of the future Southwestern Green Walk, have already started and They will be a constant in the area for years to come.
If this ambitious project promises to transform the neighborhood and improve the quality of life of residents, it also has significant effects on traffic in the capital and therefore on the Madrid City Hall, In communication with the regional government, they have planned a proposal to minimize any inconvenience that may arise.
As one of Madrid’s busiest thoroughfares is undergoing a transformation, authorities have designed a Mobility plan to reduce the impact on traffic. This document considers several alternatives, including strengthening public transport and using alternative routes. Among them the R-5, a toll highway.
In addition to traffic changes, the works will affect the mobility of neighboring neighborhoods, such as Lucero, Aluche and Las Águilaswho will be more connected to each other once the project is completed. During the construction phases, detours will be put in place and signage will be reinforced so that residents and users of the area can adapt to the changes as easily as possible.
The section most affected by the work will be that located between Portugal Avenue and Padre Piquer Avenue. In this area, the bury the highway, an intervention which aims to return a significant part of urban space to pedestrians and cyclists.
Madrid City Hall is committed to maintaining at least two lanes in each direction on the A-5 at the most impactful times. However, the reduction in capacity will mean that normal traffic on this highway, through which 80,000 vehicles circulate dailyseems slowed down.
One of the main alternatives considered in the Mobility Plan is the strengthening of public transport. The Town Hall and the Regional Transport Consortium have planned an increase in the frequencies of the EMT and Metro bus lines which will be directly affected by the work.
