At the beginning of the 29th session (COP29) of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Government of Azerbaijan signed the Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action and committed to putting children at the forefront of climate policy. .
Oku.Az The Declaration signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and President of COP29, Mukhtar Babayev, the Executive Director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, the COP29 Young Climate Champion, Leyla Hasanova, senior government officials level, as well as children and youth of Azerbaijan. .
The Declaration is the first framework of its kind adopted locally and globally to accelerate inclusive, child- and youth-led climate policies and actions.
It was noted that climate changes have a serious impact on children’s health, development, security and access to basic services.
Nearly a billion children – half of the world’s child population – live in 33 countries that are at “extremely high risk” from the effects of climate change and pollution.
