Azerbaijan’s call for peace: “Our humanity can overcome political differences and save the planet together”

Hosting the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) not only emphasizes Azerbaijan’s commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation, but also indicates the further strengthening and growth of the reputation of our country in the international arena. Furthermore, considering that this event is the first session of its kind to be held among all post-Soviet and Caucasus countries, it is of great importance in terms of representation of our region around the world.

One of the most important moments within COP29 is the launch of the “Joint Ceasefire Appeal”. This invitation calls on all parties to remain united despite political difficulties and to respect the ceasefire during COP29. The main message of COP29 is that all human beings should be equal regardless of political differences.

It should be noted that the “Joint Ceasefire Call” announced by Azerbaijan on September 21, which was celebrated as the International Day of Peace within the COP29 presidency, was supported by all member states of the Peace Movement. Non-Aligned Countries. According to information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, so far 127 countries have joined the initiative.

Of course, this is another clear example of Azerbaijan’s benevolent and peace-building step and that this step is also accepted internationally.

Oku.Azmember of the COP29 Organizing Committee, member of the Milli Majlis, who spoke about the importance of the “Joint Ceasefire Call” Parvana Valiyeva He said that climate changes affect ecosystems, human health and economies, and at the same time, they also involve issues of peace and security:

“For example, the reduction of water resources in the Africa and Middle East region causes serious problems. Lack of water has a negative impact on agriculture and leads to food security. As a result, people leave their places of residence ; This leads to an increase in migration and conflicts. These cases are not only local conflicts, but also open the way to regional tensions “We unite in debates on climate issues and seek joint solutions.”

“Our country has made a call during COP29 to guarantee peace and stop all conflicts in the world during these two weeks. This call is supported by the state parties and welcomed by more than 2,000 international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Every day the number of people joining this call increases, including countries that are members of the Non-Aligned Movement, which Azerbaijan has successfully chaired in recent years, said our interviewer.

According to him, conflicts increase greenhouse gas emissions and damage the environment, polluting land, water and air:

“The destruction of ecosystems and pollution caused by conflict worsens climate change and undermines our efforts to protect the planet. Our country also suffers gravely from environmental terrorism and the exposure of people and the environment to ecocide with landmines. placed in our territories by Armenia. During the occupation, damage to the environment is damage to the atmosphere and its negative effects will reach Armenia. The main message of COP29 is that our humanity can overcome political differences and save the planet together. A “joint ceasefire call” will be important for a safer and more sustainable future.
