Aznar hopes that ‘Israel will clearly win’ and ‘expand its influence’ for the good of the West

Despite the destruction and massacres that Israel perpetrated daily in Gaza and now in Lebanon, the former president of the government, José María Aznar, defends that Israel must finish what it started, according to him, for the good of the West.

“For the Western world and Western interests, it would be better if Israel clearly wins,” the former president said on Tuesday at an event organized by the FAES Foundation.

So he added that it would be good for us to “the only democracy in the region to be a democracy that consolidates and, as far as possible, extends its influence in this area.”

Aznar’s comments come on the same day that the UN declared that “we cannot allow Lebanon to become a new Gaza.”

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has once again stressed “Nothing can justify acts of terrorism” committed by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7 against Israel – in which some 1,200 people died and 240 others were kidnapped – in an event that provoked the Israeli response in Gaza – which today leaves more than 41,400 dead – and which led to the current regional war.

“Nor can there be any justification for the collective punishment of the Palestinian people. The scale and speed of the destruction and killings in Gaza are nothing like what I have seen in my years as Secretary-General,” Guterres said, highlighting that even UN staff have died as a result of Israeli bombardments on the Gaza Strip.

“We should all be alarmed by the escalation of tensions. Lebanon is on the brink. The people of Lebanon, Israel and the world cannot allow Lebanon to become another Gaza,” he stressed. Israel has carried out several attacks against Lebanon Last week they left more than 600 dead and thousands injured.
