The opposition and the Abkhazian authorities continue to negotiate. Protesters insist on the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania. If earlier it was reported that Bzhania refused to resign, now there is information that the authorities have proposed a candidacy for interim head of state.
“The parties discussed a possible candidacy to act. head of state. Government supporters proposed leaving current Vice President Badru Gunba in this position. The opposition, in turn, proposed that the current speaker of Parliament, Lasha Ashub, or another candidate agreeable to both parties act as interim president.” — reports Sputnik Abkhazia.
Opposition supporters who occupied the presidential administration building will not disperse until Bzhania leaves office.
Meanwhile, the Public Chamber of Abkhazia called on the authorities and the opposition to decide to resolve the conflict at the negotiating table. The call emphasizes that both parties are responsible for the destiny of the people and the republic and must return the confrontation to the legal sphere.
“Taking into account that in the near future, in accordance with the Constitution and legislation of the Republic of Abkhazia, the date of the next presidential elections will have to be set, we consider it necessary to resume the normal work of state institutions and establish a political system . dialogue,” – the chamber said in a statement.
EADaily reported that Aslan Bzhania’s term expires in spring 2025. If the opposition achieves his early resignation, elections are expected in January.
