Baku Climate Action Week concluded with ambitious commitments and strategic initiatives

A new initiative called “Azerbaijani Universities Network on Climate Change” (AUNCC) is launched within the framework of the partnership with the COP29 Presidency and the “British Council” organization. Reducing methane emissions is the main topic of discussion as leading scientists, technology providers, industry leaders and government officials come together to drive a step-change in rapidly reducing methane emissions.

Oku.Az reports that the visit of more than 700 participants to the country on the eve of COP29, the holding of more than 30 events and the important innovations announced further strengthened Azerbaijan’s leadership position within the framework of global climate action.

The Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW) was reported to have concluded with ambitious commitments and innovative initiatives on the eve of COP29 and further strengthened Azerbaijan’s leadership position within the framework of global climate action. More than 30 events were held with the participation of more than 700 representatives during the week-long meeting, which ran from September 30 to October 4 of this year. These events brought together international climate experts, government officials, youth and private sector leaders and discussed green finance, just transition, methane emissions reduction, sustainable water and food systems, among other topics.

Highlights include the launch of the first independent agricultural report under the Advanced Agenda. This report, led by the Consultative Group on International Scientific Research in Agriculture (CGIAR), in partnership with the UK Department of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development (FCDO) and the United Nations High Level Climate Champion, describes the need to transform agriculture Important steps are outlined to support global climate goals. The report complements the recently published Forward Agenda report by the International Energy Agency and high-level climate advocates and highlights strategies to decarbonize agriculture while ensuring food security, innovation and sustainability. The report is an important resource for the widespread adoption of sustainable practices in the agricultural industry.

To encourage the participation of young people, within the framework of the Baku Climate Action Week, the “University Network on Climate Change” initiative was launched. It is a new platform designed to enable the next generation to play an active role in climate solutions and transition efforts.

Reiterating the importance of youth engagement in climate action, the “Sustainable Future: Green Innovations for Youth” event created a platform for young entrepreneurs to present their “green” innovations to potential investors. During the day, three teams of young leaders who presented their sustainable ideas aimed at solving climate problems received first prize for their successful projects. Thus, this event, held in collaboration with the Agency for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, demonstrated the dynamic role of Azerbaijani youth in managing innovations ” green”.

During the Baku Climate Action Week, which emphasizes the connection between art, culture and climate, within the framework of the partnership with well-known photojournalist Reza Deghati and “The Landmark” hotel.

The week concluded with a “Walk the Talk” climate action march along Baku Boulevard, highlighting the connection between climate change, health, wellness and active lifestyles.

The success of Baku Climate Action Week inspired similar efforts in Rio de Janeiro next year. Discussions continue on the implementation of Rio Climate Action Week (#RCAW) ahead of COP30 in Belem, Brazil, in November 2025.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, said:

“Like Baku, Rio de Janeiro is seizing the opportunities presented by a greener future while recognizing the importance of taking urgent action against climate change. I look forward to bringing together cities, businesses and communities to help Baku create a safe, resilient and sustainable future. I appreciate the initiative to host the Baku Climate Action Week. The city of Rio hopes to take the baton of the sister city of Baku to accelerate the “green transition” and build a bridge between COP29 and the COP30 in Brazil.

The ambitious results and cooperative relationships achieved during the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW) have once again confirmed Azerbaijan’s position as a global leader in climate action.

Thus, the BCAW has created fertile ground for Azerbaijan to increase its ambitions and stimulate action within the framework of COP29 to be held in November.
