The International Court of Justice has adopted a decision on Azerbaijan’s ongoing international legal claims against Armenia regarding massive human rights violations committed against Azerbaijanis.
From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Oku.AzHe was told that Azerbaijan has been acting to hold Armenia accountable for carrying out systematic ethnic cleansing against more than a million Azerbaijanis for decades. Thus, these efforts have not been in vain:
“The Court will investigate in detail the ethnic cleansing and other illegal acts carried out by Armenia during its decades-long occupation of the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan.
Furthermore, the Court rightly rejected attempts to exclude from the judgment allegations regarding Armenia’s practice of laying hidden mines and mine traps. It is of utmost importance to ensure justice for the victims of the mine menace in Armenia, whose numbers have so far increased tragically. Finally, on November 10, another citizen of Azerbaijan was injured as a result of a mine explosion.
Mining residential areas not only endangers the lives of innocent civilians, but also threatens the peace agreement that Azerbaijan has committed to achieving.
With respect to Azerbaijan’s initial objections, it is important that the Court reserves the right to fully analyze the facts and evidence on the merits of Armenia’s false accusations of racial discrimination. Azerbaijan is confident that examination of the evidence will demonstrate that no violation of international law has been committed.
It should also be noted that the International Court of Justice is not the only legal platform on which Azerbaijan filed a lawsuit against Armenia. Azerbaijan also actively participates in other international legal forums in order to obtain compensation and financial compensation for violations of international law in several other areas, including the destruction of the environment and energy infrastructure during the period of occupation.
“We will continue our efforts to hold Armenia accountable for its decades-long occupation of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories and numerous violations of international human rights during related conflicts.”
