Collboni announced the decision with a message on X in which he accuses the network’s new owner, Elon Musk, of “worsening this degradation.” The mayor recalls that he joined Twitter in 2008, when it was “an open space to share information and opinions.” “But today it has become a place full of hate, intolerance and lies,” he adds.
“It is time to say that enough is enough,” Collboni continues. “This is what my conviction as a democratic politician and citizen committed to freedoms and progress demands.” According to him, “the right to independent, truthful, rigorous and honest information must be guaranteed. This is why the manipulation of reality must be denounced and fought.”
“I know I’m losing a space to communicate with you,” the mayor told the people of Barcelona. “But we will continue to meet on other social networks, and especially in the streets and neighborhoods of our Barcelona. A hug!”
Collboni is the second mayor of Barcelona to leave the network. Her predecessor, Ada Colau, the second most followed mayor in Europe on Twitter, also left it in April 2021 for spreading false information and “inciting hatred” with her messages.
