Ten garbage tanks dead fish
As in many cities of Europe, Paris has a mixed water supply system, in which wastewater and rainwater flow together. If it rains a lot in the city, which is also a consequence of climate change – the existing memory in the system quickly worries. Then a poisonous cocktail of rain, feces, microplastics, drugs and chemicals can be poured directly into the rivers and lakes. Even purified wastewater still contain traces of fabric that burden the ecosystems.
Berlin also knows this problem: in 2023, after just one heavy rain, about 2.5 cubic meters of dead fish were broken out of the canals – this corresponds to about ten filled garbage tanks.
It is easy to call more pools and bathing beaches with the help of heat and see a good solution for cooling. We people love visible. Cool bath in the river? Big. Smelly wastewater under our feet? Better to suppress. It would be much more important to fundamentally modernize the urban infrastructure: more green areas, more soils in which rainwater can leak and disappear again to cool the circulating air. Thus, less water also burdens the overflowing channels. In the end, in Berlin -Mitte, there is currently a 40-meter pool with catches, which is designed to store water under heavy rain and transferred it to the water system in a controlled manner. Completion: 2026. But the carriage entertainment in the media in the river distracts from the fact that he will need more such large and smaller cooling projects. While we are not radically rebuilding our cities, the bathing of the river remains the PR show, the consolation in the city for the wound of the wound.
Real solution: modern, powerful sewer systems, separate channels for rain and dirty water, additional storage basins, Sponge City concepts with green areas. Thus, we can cool the cities, prevent floods and keep the rivers really clean.
